Social Media - 10 Signs That You're Doing It Wrong

(Check out the webinar details below to register for a free follow-up session on how to do social media RIGHT!)

A strategy is meant to outline the means to achieving a specific goal – not to choose an exclusive tactic for execution, which may or may not be the best way to reach that goal. If you create a marketing strategy, or a communications strategy, or a customer service strategy, these may include social media – and they may not.

How do you know if you’re moving in the right direction, strategically? Here are a few cautionary signs to point the way. You can be assured that you are not getting social media right, if you are doing any of the following things:

1. You have not identified clear objectives that you wish to achieve, using social media as a tool.

2. You’ve picked the tool – whether it’s Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, or whatever – before you’ve articulated your goals.

3. You are struggling with trying to achieve your desired outcome, because you are trying to make the tool fit the strategy, instead of focussing on the best ways to meet your target.

4. You are trying to turn an execution tactic into a strategy.

5. You aren’t measuring your social media marketing efforts alongside other performance metrics.

6. You are diluting your efforts, by using a bunch of popular social media tools at once, to repeatedly say the same thing.

7. You are trying to tell, not discuss.

8. You haven’t dedicated time and resources to maintaining your social media efforts.

9. You are determined to post on social media channel “X” (whether that’s Twitter, or LinkedIn, or Tumblr, or whatever...), before you’ve even found out if your prospects and clients are in the audience.

10. You can’t see a clear link between your social media efforts and the rest of your overall marketing plan.
